It is right that Christians (and others) should 'look after' our weaker brethren - helping lame dogs over styles and that sort of thing - but we should do it with our own resources, NOT WITH BORROWED MONEY. That's the reason our national finances are in the mess they are today. So no-one should say "Not us!" - we must all play our part to live within our national income - it is only legitimate to question how and when the cuts must fall.
I suspect you mean 'stiles', Brother, as I don't suppose lame dogs are much bothered by fashion style, but strangely, I find myself basically agreeing with you. Equally strangely (no much more strangely!) I found myself agreeing with Peter Tatchell this morning when he said he didn't want to live in a society where a penthouse in London is sold for £25 million while thousands are homeless on the streets. It strikes me the penthouse dwellers could help all the 'lame dogs' of London to live in a reasonable style - if they chose.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I don't remember (but then I wouldn't) our post-war national debt being described as 'a mess', but wasn't it pretty huge, over 200% GDP, compared to 50+% now? I seem to remember paying off War Loans in 2006.
I have to say I prefer a no-debt culture, but I gather that credit is intrinsic to the capitalist system - whether for students, home-buyers or nations. Is there a better way? Puzzled!
